“Midnight Blues & Summertime” — by MAAS
Midnight Blues & Summertime is one painting made of two canvases. Tik (man) and Tok (woman) tell the story of a couple in New York during summertime. A relationship lived between heat and noise, movement and stillness, love and confusion.
This piece was inspired by the salsa song “Un Verano en Nueva York”. For me, New York becomes a palette full of colour — intense, chaotic, vibrant, and unforgiving. The city breathes through them. It pushes them together and pulls them apart at the same time.
Tik and Tok represent the messiness of loving in a city like this. Two people who love, suffer, and dream while trying to survive emotionally in a place that never stops. Their bodies and colours clash and dance, just like relationships do when passion meets reality.
This painting is not just their story. It’s one of millions. New York holds endless lives, endless summers, endless heartbreaks and hopes. Midnight Blues & Summertime is my way of capturing one small, intimate moment inside that vast human noise — where love tries to exist, even when everything around it is moving too fast.
