“Saint Valentine’s” — by MAAS
Love has always been central to my work — maybe too much. One of my biggest flaws is the amount of emotion I carry inside. If I felt a little less, I might only suffer a fraction of what I do every day. Sometimes those emotions blind me from the inside out.
This painting is a self-portrait of that state. A lover, a fool, full of colour, offering his heart while holding a rose of the same colour, the same weight, the same height. Love and vulnerability carried equally. In that moment, he feels like a million dollars — open, alive, fearless. And yet, at the same time, he feels small and empty.
The colours are loud because love is loud for me. It overwhelms, it lifts, it exhausts. This figure stands there exposed, not asking for protection, only understanding. Giving everything, even when it hurts.
Saint Valentine’s is not a romantic fantasy. It’s love as I know it — intense, messy, beautiful, and sometimes painfully heavy. But still worth carrying. Always worth offering.
