“Holy Guacamole” — by MAAS
Holy Guacamole is my playful take on Mexican devotion, culture, and colour. I wanted to create a piece that celebrates the intensity and passion you find in Mexican religious imagery — the bright tones, the symbolism, the way faith becomes part of everyday life. But I also wanted to approach it with humour, affection, and a touch of irreverence.
The figure in the painting sits somewhere between the sacred and the absurd. The exaggerated mouth, the expressive eyes, and the bold colours are a reminder that devotion in Latin America is never just solemn — it’s emotional, loud, alive, and full of contradictions. The halo of colours around the figure mirrors the visual language we see in traditional iconography, but with a modern, chaotic twist.
For me, Holy Guacamole is both a tribute and a wink. It honours the beauty of spiritual identity in Mexico while also acknowledging the humour, creativity, and cultural explosion that make Latin devotion so unique. It’s a love letter to colour, faith, and the way we mix the sacred with everyday life.
